Description
The Racer Retro by Anton Suhanov is a highly original mechanical wristwatch inspired by the aesthetics and emotional appeal of classic automobiles. Developed by independent watchmaker Anton Suhanov, the watch translates the visual language of vintage car dashboards into an unconventional time display combining retrograde indications and jumping hours.
Presented during the AHCI Masters of Horology exhibition in Geneva, the Racer Retro evolves from Suhanov’s first wristwatch, the Racer Jumping Hour GMT. The watch now features a partially skeletonized dial that reveals the mechanical architecture of the movement beneath, allowing the owner to admire the retrograde mechanisms and GMT indication in action.
Produced in a limited edition of only 28 pieces, the Racer Retro combines mechanical creativity, automotive inspiration and distinctive design into a unique independent watchmaking creation.
The Concept
The Concept
The Racer Retro draws its inspiration from the universal experience of sitting behind the wheel of a car and observing the dashboard instruments. Instead of referencing specific car brands or racing chronographs, Anton Suhanov focused on the emotional and visual language of classic automobiles.
The retrograde minutes resemble a speedometer, while the retrograde jumping hours evoke the movement of a tachometer.
This automotive inspiration is further reinforced through several design elements, including the perforated hands inspired by vintage steering wheel spokes and the sandy-beige subdials reminiscent of wooden steering wheels commonly found in sports cars of the 1960s and 1970.
The skeletonized dial reveals the mechanics behind the display, showcasing the retrograde systems and the 24-hour GMT mechanism.
The design creates a striking contrast between the dark movement components and the polished steel elements, giving the impression that the mechanics are floating within the dial.
Additional automotive references can be found in the domed full-disc rotor, inspired by the nickel hubcaps of classic American cars from the 1950s.
