Konstantin Chaykin: The Visionary Watchmaker of Russia
A Pioneer in Independent Watchmaking
Two decades ago, few would have believed that a Russian watchmaker could create timepieces capable of competing with the finest examples from Switzerland, Germany, and Japan. Yet, Konstantin Chaykin has defied expectations, establishing himself as a world-renowned master of haute horlogerie. His work is recognized for its bold innovations, creative complexity, and mechanical ingenuity, making him one of the most original figures in the watch industry today.
In 2010, Chaykin became the first and only Russian member of the AHCI (Académie Horlogère des Créateurs Indépendants), a prestigious organization of independent watchmakers. He later served as President of the AHCI from 2016 to 2019. His dedication to innovation was acknowledged in 2018, when his Clown watch won the Audacity Prize at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG), marking a historic moment as the first Russian watchmaker to receive such an award.
Innovation Beyond Boundaries
Unlike many watchmakers who focus on refining traditional complications, Konstantin Chaykin has always sought to push the boundaries of watchmaking. His creations are deeply rooted in philosophical, creative, and technical ingenuity, making them truly stand out from mass-produced watches by large corporations. His portfolio of inventions includes:
Moscow Computus Clock – The most complex mechanical clock ever made in Russia, designed to calculate the Orthodox Easter date.
Lunokhod Watch – Featuring the largest spherical moonphase complication ever built into a wristwatch.
Cinema Watch – The world’s first wristwatch with a built-in mechanical cinematograph that can reproduce moving images.
Levitas Watch – Featuring an advanced version of the “mysterious” time display on a transparent dial.
Russian Time Watch – Displays time across all 11 Russian time zones.
Mars Conqueror Mk1 – The first complex mechanical watch to display Mars time alongside astronomical and cosmic indicators.
Jewish and Islamic Calendar Watches – Timepieces featuring traditional religious calendar complications.
The Konstantin Chaykin Manufacture
Founded in 2003, the Konstantin Chaykin Manufacture is the only Russian luxury watch brand exclusively producing high-end, locally made timepieces. Each of Chaykin’s watches is powered by a complex mechanical caliber, designed and produced in-house. Unlike many independent brands that use standard Swiss movements, Chaykin insists on developing his own unique movements, making each piece incomparable in the global watch industry.
Chaykin's approach to watchmaking can be summarized by two distinct paths:
Reviving traditional craftsmanship – Honoring classical horological techniques.
Inventing the future – Pioneering new complications never before seen in watchmaking.
From the very beginning, Chaykin chose to forge his own path. In 2005, instead of producing conventional tourbillons and perpetual calendars, he focused on inventing the Orthodox Computus, a world-first device capable of calculating and displaying the dates of Orthodox Easter.
Accolades and Achievements
Konstantin Chaykin’s contributions to watchmaking have been widely recognized, earning him numerous international accolades:
WIPO Gold Medal (2013) – Awarded for outstanding contributions to intellectual property and innovation.
Temporis Hall of Fame (2022) – Inducted alongside legendary watchmakers like Richard Mille, Kari Voutilainen, and Philippe Dufour.
Distinguished Inventor of the Russian Federation (2022) – An honor recognizing his lifelong contributions to horology, personally signed by President Vladimir Putin.
Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (2018) – Winner of the Audacity Prize for the Clown watch.

A Legacy of Innovation
As of February 2024, Konstantin Chaykin holds an unmatched 96 patents for his inventions, along with 62 utility model patents, making him the most prolific watchmaker in the world in terms of intellectual property. Over his career, he has developed more than 30 mechanical calibers and functional models, further solidifying his reputation as one of the most inventive minds in modern horology.
With an unrelenting drive to innovate and an ability to merge artistry with technical mastery, Konstantin Chaykin continues to redefine what is possible in independent watchmaking. His legacy is not just about creating timepieces—it is about reshaping the very landscape of haute horlogerie for generations to come.
